SpellQuizzer Spelling Practice Software Review

I received a free copy of SpellQuizzer software to review, and I'm so excited to share my thoughts about it with you!

SpellQuizzer is a spelling program that helps children learn their spelling words quickly and easily. To use SpellQuizzer, you create individual spelling lists, making a recording of each spelling word over your computer's microphone (or writing a clue phrase if you don't choose to record the words audibly).  The SpellQuizzer interface is very simple to understand, so I found that creating lists was quite easy and didn't take much time at all, just a couple minutes for a 20-word list. After you've created your spelling list, your child can practice it by clicking Quiz me on a list! on the main screen (seen below) and then selecting the desired spelling list on the following screen.

You can choose to name your spelling lists in whatever way works for you. I chose to identify my own lists based on where the words came from. For example, my kids do most of their spelling from their Wordly Wise vocabulary books. So a list from book 7, lesson 3 is identified as Wordly Wise 7:3.

After your child chooses the list he wants to practice, he sees a screen like this below:

The spelling word is played over the speaker, the child types in the spelling word, and then he clicks Check Spelling. If the word is spelled correctly, the program moves on to the next word. If the word was incorrect, it displays the correct spelling (along with how the word was typed incorrectly), and then the program moves on to the next word.

Once your child finishes the list, he is given the opportunity to practice the words he missed again. This process repeats until all the words are spelled correctly. Of course, at the end, he again has the opportunity to go through the entire spelling list in one shot. If he manages to get all the words in the list correct on the first attempt, he's rewarded with thunderous applause!

My kids absolutely love SpellQuizzer — they even think it's fun! Not only does it work ideally with the way we do spelling, it drastically cuts down on the time both my kids and I have to set aside to practice spelling words…and who couldn't stand to free up some time in their day? Also, if you make up your own spelling lists from your child's writing like I do, SpellQuizzer is a superb way to organize those lists. Even if you don't make up your own lists, you can also download pre-made spelling lists for SpellQuizzer from their web site.

So is it any surprise that I highly recommend SpellQuizzer? It think it's an excellent program for both homeschoolers and public school families alike.

So what are you waiting for? Check out SpellQuizzer and download your free 30-day trial right now. I think you'll soon wonder how you ever taught spelling without it.

You might check out spellingcity.com (free site). It's similar to what you've described but it's free and archives your stuff on the web instead of on your pc/mac. BTW, I've just discovered your site and am enjoying it.
