The entire text of John Taylor Gatto's The Underground History of American Education:A School Teacher's Intimate Investigation Into the Problem of Modern Schooling can now be read in its entirety here at his website. (There's even a printer-friendly version of each chapter should you choose to print it out.) This should prove to be an interesting read, especially if you're not already familiar with Mr. Gatto's writings.
Although not a homeschooler himself, John Taylor Gatto is well known in the homeschool community for his outspokenness about the state of American education. He was named New York State Teacher of the Year three times, but quit teaching in 1991 while still Teacher of the Year, claiming that he was no longer willing to hurt children. He's since written several books about education which are read by thousands of homeschoolers nationwide.
Here are some of Mr. Gatto's other books:
- Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling (This is the only book of his I've read so far.)
- Weapons of Mass Instruction: A Schoolteacher's Journey Through the Dark World of Compulsory Schooling
- A Different Kind of Teacher: Solving the Crisis of American Schooling
- The Exhausted School: Bending the Bars of Traditional Education
