Last night Joely, my 5-year-old, informed me that she wanted to write out a list of what she wanted to eat the next day. So I gave her a notebook and pencil and she took it to her bedroom with her.
This morning when I woke her up, before she even said good morning to me, she sat up and exclaimed, "Look what I wrote!" And she swiftly lifted up her pillow, pulled out the notebook she'd apparently been lying on all night, and showed me her menu plan for today.
Of course, her spelling isn't perfect—she is, after all, only five—but I could easily read the words. If you're unfamiliar with kindergarten phonetic spelling, here's the translation:
chocolate muffins
peanut butter and jelly
sandwiches
cereal
cinnamon sugar toast
juice
So, you see? Menu planning works so well for us, even my 5-year-old does it!

That is too cute! I love 5 year old writing. My daughter and I did some grocery shopping this afternoon and she asked me if I could work burgers and fries into the menu. She thinks that I won't budge on our planned menu!

I could read Joely's list perfectly! She's obviously been paying attention to what her mama's been doing.
