My son is not a recreational reader. In fact, it's almost like pulling teeth getting him to read sometimes. But there have been two book series in particular that really grabbed his attention—even to the point that he sat down and read when he wasn't required (gasp!). Needless to say, I would highly recommend these books for your reluctant reader.
1) The Seven Sleepers Series & Seven Sleepers: The Lost Chronicles, by Gilbert Morris. This was the first series Jaden read that he absolutely fell in love with (in 3rd grade if I remember right). There are ten books in the original Seven Sleepers series, with another series of seven books following it, entitled Seven Sleepers: The Lost Chronicles.
Seven Sleepers Series
- Flight of the Eagles
- The Gates of Neptune
- The Sword of Camelot
- The Caves That Time Forgot
- Winged Raiders of the Desert
- Empress of the Underworld
- Attack of the Amazons
- Voyage of the Dolphin
- Escape with the Dream Maker
- The Final Kingdom
- City of the Cyborgs
- The Savage Game of Lord Zarak
- The Spell of the Crystal Chair
- The Strange Creatures of Dr. Korbo
- The Temptation of Pleasure Island
- The Terrible Beast of Zor
- The Victims of Nimbo
2) The Kingdom Series, by Chuck Black. Jaden is currently reading book four of this six-book series. It's basically an allegory of Genesis through Revelation set in medieval times. There are even study questions in the back (about three or four for each chapter) that help guide the reader to a better understanding of the the allegory (and YES, there are answers too!). We've loaned book one to several of Jaden's friends (boys and girls) and every one of them have fallen in love with the series as well. Again, I would highly recommend this series!
- Kingdom's Dawn
- Kingdom's Hope
- Kingdom's Edge
- Kingdom's Call
- Kingdom's Quest
- Kingdom's Reign

Oooh! Thanks for the recommendation. My boys (the older two) have already read through the two Seven Sleepers series, but we haven't seen the Kingdom series. The Seven Sleeper books were at my local library; I hope the Kingdom one is there, too. I'll look on Friday, when we go.
