Book Review, Tahosa Treasure (Christian fiction for kids)

Last week I received an email from author Hannah McKay, introducing us to her book Tahosa Treasure and asking whether we might want to review it. Since the book is written for kids, not adults, I asked my 10-year-old daughter if she'd like to read and review the book, and she jumped at the chance. (Of course as a homeschool mom I'm thinking this is an excellent opportunity for her to learn how to write a book review, but Joely didn't have to know that!)

Joely was very eager to read the book, so it took her only two days to finish it. Here is what she thought:

The book Tahosa Treasure By Hannah Mckay and Jeff Roth is about three boys who go on a little adventure. They have many near-death experiences and find hidden treasure, gold, and an old Spanish soldier skeleton as they travel deep into a mountain. But they don't know they were followed by a stranger that wants their treasure. They travel inside the mountain and learn to survive in darkness with God's help.

In Tahosa Treasure I learned a few things about the Spanish soldiers that lived in the past. I learned about gold and dagger blades. The book taught me to be prepared for anything that might come my way, expected or unexpected. I found out that I should tell my parents the whole truth. I think the biggest thing the book taught me was that in every situation I need to trust God with my heart, mind, and soul.

I really enjoyed Tahosa Treasure. It was filled with action and adventure and that is exactly what kids want these days. It is filled with the teaching of God and that's what kids need. I can't wait for the next adventure of the trio!

Obviously Joely enjoyed the book, and she thinks your kids might like it too.

About the Authors

The authors of Tahosa Treasure, Hanna McKay and Jeff Roth, are a father-daughter writing team. Hannah McKay has written for Regent University's online newspaper, The Daily Runner, and has two articles published in USA Today's National Gallery of Writing. She holds a master's degree in journalism. She and her husband, Matt, live in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Jeff Roth is a retired Naval Flight Officer. He holds a bachelor's degree in history and lives with his wife, Becky, in Choctaw, Oklahoma.

Thanks for the telling us about Tahosa Treasure. I really loved Joely's comments about the book, and so did my daughters. They are very interested in reading it, too. One of our favorite Christian books from when they were younger was Helpful Hal's Treasury of Christian Virtues, which has funny rhyming stories to help kids understand virtues in an easy and fun way. http://www.amazon.com/Helpful-Treasury-Christian-Building-Character/dp/0781402948

We have also loved DragonRider by Cornelia Funke, Alice Miranda by Jaqueline Harvey, Nancy Drew, The Double Daring Book for Girls, and the Fablehaven Series.

I am a writer and would love to get my kids involved in writing a book with me. What a great way to encourage imagination and teach children the love of writing. Kudos to the author and his daughter!!

Hi Joy, Do you think my 14 year old son, who doesn't like to read, might find this book interesting and fun? He is currently reading Hemingway's 'The Old Man and the Sea' and really enjoying it :o)

@Karen, I haven't read the book myself, but it is written on a much simpler level than Hemingway. πŸ™‚ That being said, the story itself really interested my 10yo, so I'd imagine it would appeal to a 14yo as well.
