13 Books for Reluctant Readers

Bookworm

My sixth grade son is a good reader, but he doesn't really like to read. As is typical of many boys his age, he'd rather be on the Wii, the computer, or playing with his Legos. But these books below actually earned a "That was really good" from him after he finished them, which is high praise considering he often considers himself too cool to admit that he likes a book. So if you happen to have a reluctant reader, you might like to give a few of these books a try!

1. The Seven Sleepers Series by Gilbert Morris. A Christian fiction quasi-fantasy series.

2. The Cooper Kids Series by Frank Peretti. A Christian fiction mystery series set in modern times.

3. The Redwall Series by Brian Jacques.

4. Castaways of the Flying Dutchman by Brian Jacques

5. The Kingdom Series by Chuck Black. This series is basically an allegory of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, but set in the Middle Ages.

6. Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater

7. Trapped in Tenochtitlan: An Aztec Adventure by Eric Burnett.

8. Eragon by Christopher Paolini

9. Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke

10. Time Cat by Lloyd Alexander.

11. Adam of the Road by Elizabeth Janet Gray. This is set in the Middle Ages and is often read for its value as historical fiction.

12. Rascal by Sterling North. An award-winning book about a boy and a raccoon.

13. Do Hard Things by Alex and Brett Harris (This is not a fiction book, by the way. The subtitle is "A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations." I HIGHLY recommend this book!!)

I hope this list of 13 books will stimulate your reluctant reader. IF you know of ones that have worked on your own kids, leave a comment.

So glad I found your blog through the Link up.

There are lots of great ones here. We've read most of them, but a few I am going to get for my 6th grader – thanks. 🙂

Author James Patterson has a ten year-old son who doesn’t like to read. So Patterson has established http://www.readkiddoread.com to help other reluctant readers.

I, too, grew up as a reluctant reader. And my father was the author of over 70 books. Now I write action-adventure and mystery books especially for tween boys. My blog, Books for boys, http://booksandboys.blogspot.com is # 4 on Google today.
