(As a point of reference, my dad is holding Joely, and he's 6 feet 2 inches tall.)

[ In answer to some of your questions, this horse, named Casey, is some kind of draft horse (I think he was a Belgian, but I could be wrong). He had been severely abused and neglected. He was found, half-starved, in a small stall where he had been standing in water for weeks. He was down to 1,200 pounds, when he should have weighed well over 2,500 for his size. The man in the first picture adopted the horse and has been helping him recover. Casey's actually around 1,500 pounds in the picture, still way below his ideal weight, but improving every day. You can still see his pelvic bones under his skin because he's so skinny. His hooves are permanently damaged due to the water he was forced to stand in for so long, but they have recovered a little bit.
I found it was very interesting that Casey remains unrestrained and roams around this man's property like a pet dog, yet Casey stays close to the house all the time. He's the gentlest horse I've ever met…but yes, he's HUGE! Guiness, apparently, was in the process of researching whether this beautiful animal was the current tallest horse in the world, but there wasn't a verdict yet. Either way, I'd never seen a larger horse in my life. His head alone weighs more than my father! ]

What a gorgeous horse! I was thinking he looking pretty skinny before reading your post. So sad that someone would treat him like that. Glad he is doing better.

I'm glad someone is taking good care of the horse now. I just don't get some people…and how they can do stuff like that to animals. If I even start to think about our dog being left in our apartment for a day without going outside or having her water dish filled, I almost cry (I once saw a story of a dog that had been left in a house or an apt long enough to become very emaciated and sick, which is what makes me thing of the same thing happening to my dog).
That horse does look like a Belgian. They're huge and very nice and easygoing. A neighbor pastured a herd of his Belgians on our farm when I was growing up. The biggest one weighed 2300 pounds. He was huge, especially to a ten-year-old, but he was a sweetheart.

We were at the state fair this past year watching a horse show. When we left we walked past the clidesdales(sp?) coming out of the arena. I was by myself with my 5 kids just 30 feet away from these HUGE but lovely animals.
The ground shook when they walked by. I have never felt anything like that. I told the kids if a horse gets out of control. RUN and I will catch up with you.
Still it was amazing to stand and watch these beautiful animals so close.
Take care,
Amy
