I haven't been doing a lot of recreational reading lately. In fact, it's been months since I've picked up a novel. So when I received The Swiss Courier in the mail (courtesy of Litfuse Publishing Group), I took it as a sign that I needed to slow down…and read!
I must say it was refreshing to step away from the computer and the school books for a while and curl up on the couch with a good book. Historical fiction is my favorite genre, so I was engrossed in The Swiss Courier from the start. Written from the point of view of a Swiss-American woman working in Switzerland, it gave me a different perspective of the WWII than I've had previously, especially with regard to the role that Switzerland itself played in the war.
The Swiss Courier: A Synopsis
It is August 1944 and the Gestapo is mercilessly rounding up suspected enemies of the Third Reich. When Joseph Engel, a German physicist working on the atomic bomb, finds that he is actually a Jew, adopted by Christian parents, he must flee for his life to neutral Switzerland. Gabi Mueller is a young Swiss-American woman working for the newly formed American Office of Strategic Services (the forerunner to the CIA) close to Nazi Germany. When she is asked to risk her life to safely "courier" Engel out of Germany, the fate of the world rests in her hands. If she can lead him to safety, she can keep the Germans from developing nuclear capabilities. But in a time of traitors and uncertainty, whom can she trust along the way?
