RSSI wrote a couple months ago about the new drawing curriculum, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, that my son has been using this year and how much we have both been enjoying it. Before he actually delved into the curriculum, he had to draw a few pre-instruction drawings, one of which was a self portrait. He's been through the majority of the curriculum now, and today he completed another self portrait. He was more than pleasantly surprised at how much better it was than his first attempt. I must say that I'm impressed as well. We will definitely be using this same curriculum for the girls.
