Quote of the Day: Abraham Lincoln

"Upon the subject of education, not presuming to dictate any plan or system respecting it, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people can be engaged in. That every man may receive at least, a moderate education, and thereby be enabled to read the histories of his own and other countries, by which he may duly appreciate the value of our free institutions, appears to be an object of vital importance, even on this account alone, to say nothing of the advantages and satisfaction to be derived from all being able to read the scriptures and other works, both of a religious and moral nature, for themselves. For my part, I desire to see the time when education, and by its means, morality, sobriety, enterprise and industry, shall become much more general than at present, and should be gratified to have it in my power to contribute something to the advancement of any measure which might have a tendency to accelerate the happy period." (bold is mine)

From Abraham Lincoln's first political announcement on March 9, 1832

Doesn't it feel good to be reminded that we, as homeschooling parents, are doing something so vitally important—educating our children for the future, as well as leading them in the Way for eternity. What could be more important than that?

Hey, thanks for the link to my blog. I like your hubby's, too, and sent a link of it to my own husband, who is our church's worship pastor.

What an affirming quote!! Oftentimes I feel very badly because it seems like the only thing I'm doing really well is schooling my children. Not to make excuses, or to justify slovenliness or anything, but I've had to determine that the kids' education has to be made a priority, even if that means the laundry piles up until the weekend, or that the breakfast dishes stay in the sink… Or that I don't get my eyebrows waxed as often as I should, or that that errand doesn't get done today, or whatever.

I hope that makes sense. It's always a goal for me to fit it all in, and do all that I do well, but honestly, 99% of my days find me, at the end, sighing because I didn't get done nearly all that I wanted or even needed to do.

So, it's reassuring that the 16th president tells me that the thing I'm doing best is the thing that's, overall, most important. :)
