My eager little learner

Joely's Math U See Primer books and counting blocks arrived today, and Joely was very excited about it. She immediately grabbed the DVD, put it in the DVD player, and started watching it.

The lessons start out very basic, so Joely watched through lesson 7 in no time, doing the pages in her workbook as she went along. Even though the material that was presented was material she already knew, she did make substantial progress in one particular area as I watched.

She was supposed to count the sets and write down the appropriate number, but I started noticing that she wasn't really counting anymore, yet she was writing the correct number down.

At one point, when she wrote "9" correctly next to a set, I asked her how she knew there were that many in the set without counting them. She gave me a look as if to say, "Can't you figure out, Mom?" Then she pointed to the sheet and said, "See, there's four and four; that's eight. But there's one more, so it's nine. Four and five is nine!"

My 5-year-old figured it out all by herself. And made me feel just a little insignificant and unnecessary.

  1. That is so cute and what a smarty she is….my kids love MUS. My daughter is getting ready to finish up Primer and go to Alpha so I am thinking of a little book ceremony. Another great tip that I picked up from another MUS user is that the blocks fit nicely in a fishing tackle box from Wal-Mart. We have both sets of blocks and they all fit nicely and make math portable. Enjoy! :)
