I was reminded tonight of one of my all-time favorite websites for learning about practically anything — HowStuffWorks.com. We've used this site to learn about atoms, the stock market, the inner workings of a toilet, and even guns and ammo. Not only are the articles well-written and easy-to-understand, many include animations to help demonstrate concepts, which is something you don't get from a regular encyclopedia.
So hop on over to How Stuff Works, bookmark it, and visit it often. You'll be so glad you did!

Right now my son's favorite site is Google Maps. He explored the entire US last night following train tracks and looking for the various signals lol.
