Free worksheets for learning the U.S. states and postal abbreviations
February 1, 2008
I made a set of worksheets to help my kids learn the names and locations of the U.S. states as well as the U.S. postal abbreviations. I prefer to focus on having my kids learn postal abbreviations before learning state capitals since (from my experience at least) knowing postal abbreviations is much more useful in real life than knowing that Olympia—not Seattle—is the capital of Washington. Unless, of course, you like playing trivia games.
The eight-page PDF includes the following (click the link to download the file):
- Two maps of the U.S: one for study, and one for testing
- One worksheet specifically focused on learning the postal abbreviations (and why they are what they are)
- Three worksheets focused on identifying the states on the map and postal abbreviations
Here are samples of three of the pages:

I am very surprised with all these great tools that I can use to teach my kids with. If it wasn't for this website I would have never been able to help my child during home school. Thank-you guys!

As a teacher, I couldn't agree with you more about the need to teach children about the abbreviations over the capitals. They are definitely more useful!
