Basic Music Theory Study Guide

I posted last weekend about the book Basic Music Theory: How to Read, Write, and Understand Written Music, by Jonathan Harnum, which is available for download in its entirety here. (UPDATE: The author has recently changed the download from FREE to PAID. You can still download the 1st edition of Basic Music Theory here, although I believe that free download is viewable only.) I'm planning to use this book to help me teach my kids music theory over the next year.

But I've been down this road many times. I find a great book, but I don't have the direction I need to plan out the lessons. Next thing I know, the book is on the shelf…lonely and forgotten.

So this time I sat down and wrote out a study guide for the whole book in advance of actually teaching it. This should make teaching this book a whole lot easier.

If you'd like to download the study guide to use with the Basic Music Theory book, just click here. The first page of the guide can be seen below.

bmt_study_guide_page1The study guide, which I created in the style of Beautiful Feet study guides, is divided into 31 lessons. I also coordinated many of the lessons with several online music theory activities. The entire pdf is 127 pages long, but only 7 of the pages is the actual study guide. The rest of the pdf consists of the Practial Use pages from Basic Music Theory (the worksheet pages from the end of each chapter) as well as the quizzes and keys.

This is my first draft of the guide, so I can't promise it is without errors, but it might help you organize your lessons if you're planning to use Basic Music Theory with your kids. If you do end up using this study guide and you find errors in it, I would greatly appreciate it if you'd let me know so I can fix them.

I'm so excited about using Basic Music Theory to teach my kids about music. I mean, really, what more can I ask for than a terrific, FREE curriculum? That definitely Works for Me!
