I never thought I'd see the day when my 10-year-old and 8-year-old argue with each other over who "gets to" do the dishes. But that day is here!
I have found the motivation for chores that works—and works really well! (At least for the time being.)
PlayStation time is SO precious to my kids that I've promised them 15 minutes of play time on the PS2 for unloading or loading the dishwasher. And I absolutely love the result—I haven't even had to ask the kids to do the dishes. They practically climb over each other to get to the dishwasher first!
Who knows how long this will last, but boy, it sure is great!

I have a marble jar, which is big and made of clear plastic. I found two smaller jars almost like the large one. I filled mine with marbles. After they earn so many marbles they get rewards. Sometimes they have to pass up small rewards for larger rewards. Like an over-nighter, or trip to a movie, or out for an ice-cream. Those cost more marbles. They love it. What they don't like is..I take away marbles for bad behavior, like being rude, fighting, or getting mouthy. It works both ways.
We've also made "bonus bucks" using our print shop. We found dollar bills in the graphics, made each girl 50, and put their name on them, so one couldn't swip anothers. LOL Pretty smart, yea? Anyway, I took the sheets and had them laminated, then cut them out. Each girl got an envelope to keep their "savings". Dishes earned one, making their beds and cleaning their rooms, so forth and so on. Not everything earned one, or it gets to be a hassle.
These are fun, too.
We go back and forth over the years. Alot of the time we don't use anything, just to see how they do. Those 2 things have helped us. I keep them for when we need them again. They even ask!
