Cooking up a tradition

cooking.jpgWell, it's now been three weeks in a row that we've continued with our Saturday night kids' cook tradition. We've been using the book Cooking For Beginners by Usborne Books because it has kid-friendly directions and easy-to-follow directions—and it's been wonderful.

Three weeks ago Jerah made French bread pizzas. It was a roaring success, with all three of the kids wolfing them down in no time (and two are very picky eaters).

Last week Jaden made cheesy beef burgers, and again, all three kids ate them (even Jerah who is a former vegetarian!). Here's a photo montage of his dinner preparation from last week:

Tonight Joely got in on the action and prepared pasta with fresh tomato sauce. And again, it was a hit with all three kids.

Now, you've got to understand how unusual it is to sit down to the dinner table and have everyone (i.e. all three kids) in the family partake of the meal that has been prepared. More often than not, one or the other child (the girls, I'll admit) refuses to eat the main dish, or the vegetables, or both. And so they go hungry.

But now that we've had three weeks in a row with everyone eating the entire meal, I think we may just have to continue with this Saturday night tradition!

Great idea, if my kids cook it they are more likely to eat it. It looks like your kids are having fun as well!

That's a cute idea. Do you help them pick out what to cook, etc?

    Michie,

Yes, they pick out what to cook from the kids' cookbooks we have, then they also write out a shopping list, based on what we don't already have on hand. It's been such a great experience for all of us!
