My dad's favorite show is Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader. We don't pick it up on our rabbit-eared TV so I've never watched any full episodes, but I just found this interesting clip from a show a couple months ago.
The contestant, Kellie Pickler, former American Idol finalist, gives a shining example of the kind of education in world geography she apparently received from her public school (I sure hope it's not an example of a typical public school education…). I really couldn't believe she was serious at first; but by the time it was over, I was convinced that she was thoroughly, earnestly, and unashamedly— clueless!

I personally can't stomach her. I don't know if you're an American Idol fan but when she was on there she always acted like she was completely clueless. I think some women think that's an attractive thing???? I can't even imagine being that ignorant OR acting that ignorant on purpose so whichever it is it's really pretty pathetic.

I had a totally serious discussion with the boys on what NOT to get married to. Guaranteed she wandered through her education focusing on being cute. Now, before millions, she gets her glorious debut. Ta-Da!!!

I love the show, her I am not so crazy about. Ah, the product of a government school education!
My kids love to watch the show (one of the few we actually watch) and test themselves.

Public school teacher alert…..if you think Kelly Pickler is the poster child for a public school education you are completely WRONG!!! Most public school teachers do their best to educate kids in their care. My hats off to moms and dads who really homeschool their kids, but sometimes we get students who have supposedly been homeschooled and they are severely behind! So it goes both ways, there are good public school teachers and bad, and good homeschoolers and bad. Joy is one of the excellent homeschool moms, by the way!

Tina, I totally agree with you! I've seen a lot of public school kids who skate through without learning very much at all. But I've also seen a few homeschool kids who have done just about the same thing. It definitely goes both ways.
I, for one, made it through high school graduation knowing very little about anything, but making straight A's all the same. And I was public school for 8 1/2 years, homeschooled for 1 1/12 and private schooled for 1!
But I'm learning now along with my kids, and at least I can say that MY homeschooled kids know that Europe is a continent and France is a country!
