Costumes 2008: A Rerun (at least mostly)

We don't like spending much money on costumes, especially since we don't go trick-or-treating, but the kids usually have the opportunity to dress up for our church's fall festival. This year our church isn't hosting a festival, so the kids instead dressed up for our impromptu fall party at our homeschool club.

Jaden, like last year (and the four years prior to that if I remember right), decided to be a ninja.

Joely was again Raggedy Ann.

But Jerah chose to be something new this year — a cheerleader (oh, joy!), complete with homemade cheerleader pom poms. Jerah decided the WHS on her top stands for "We Home School."

Like last year, the grand total for this year's costumes was $0 (the cheerleader outfit was a hand-me-down from a friend), and yet the kids had just as much fun dressing up in the "rerun" costumes as they would have in $20 costumes. I'm so thankful my kids aren't terribly picky when it comes to dressing up for Halloween.

Self Portrait: A Before and After

I wrote a couple months ago about the new drawing curriculum, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, that my son has been using this year and how much we have both been enjoying it. Before he actually delved into the curriculum, he had to draw a few pre-instruction drawings, one of which was a self portrait. He's been through the majority of the curriculum now, and today he completed another self portrait. He was more than pleasantly surprised at how much better it was than his first attempt. I must say that I'm impressed as well. We will definitely be using this same curriculum for the girls.

JoJo's drawing

Joely has been doing a lot of drawing lately, so this morning she drew a picture of her daddy. Check it out on her blog if you have a chance!

Curriculum Review of Rod and Staff English

Just thought I'd let everyone know that I posted a lengthy curriculum review of Rod and Staff English over at my other blog, Happy to be at Home. Rod and Staff English has now joined ranks with Story of the World and Wordly Wise as some of my favorite curricula!
